From the structured world of banking to the vibrant, impactful realm of sustainable fashion, Jana Heinemann has carved a unique path, challenging industry norms and fostering a global community through her Berlin-based label, IMPARI MODA. Jana’s story is one of vision, resilience, and a deep commitment to making the fashion industry a force for positive social and environmental change.
The Spark of a Vision
Jana’s journey didn’t begin with a sewing machine; it started with an apprenticeship as a bank clerk, where she gained crucial insights into business structures and financial systems. However, her true passion lay elsewhere. Transitioning into fashion, she trained as a tailor and later pursued a degree in Fashion Design in Berlin.
A transformative experience working as a tailor in Italy was the pivotal moment that sparked the vision for IMPARI. It was here that she saw the potential to blend traditional craftsmanship, cultural identity, and social responsibility into a single brand. Inspired by Berlin’s diverse Afro scenes and her experiences living abroad, Jana envisioned a label that celebrates individuality and diversity.
The Birth of IMPARI MODA
Founded in 2018 (with the studio and store opening in April 2019), IMPARI MODA stands for “unequal” in Italian, a name that encapsulates its philosophy of embracing difference and continuous learning. Jana’s mission goes beyond aesthetics; she aims to connect people through her art, reminding them of their shared humanity and the beauty of a diverse world.
The brand quickly became known for its signature style:
- Bold, self-created prints and vibrant colors
- Non-binary, unisex designs that are inclusive and adapt to various body types
- A commitment to comfortability, sustainability, and individuality
Pioneering Social-Fashion and Zero-Waste
Jana’s most notable contribution to the industry is her unwavering commitment to sustainability, particularly her innovative zero-waste technique. All garments are produced locally in her Berlin studio, and every single cutting remnant is reused in future creations, creating a truly circular production model.
Beyond this technique, IMPARI champions conscious living by utilizing 100% recycled PET materials, transforming plastic waste into stylish, wearable art. Her work demonstrates that fashion can have depth, connection, and meaning beyond superficial trends.
Global Impact: The Nnoboa Space Project
Jana’s social impact extends internationally. In 2023, IMPARI and Code for Afrika e.V. co-created the “Nnoboa Space,” an innovative program in Ghana. This initiative empowers young art and design professionals in the Sekondi–Takoradi Area with essential skills in sustainability, creative identity, and business innovation. The project is making waves in the local creative ecosystem, highlighting Jana’s belief in the power of community to drive change.
Recognition and the Miss Germany Stage
While traditional fashion awards are a marker of success, Jana’s advocacy has found unique platforms. She was a finalist in the Miss Germany competition (securing a spot in the Top 18 and later Top 12), where the focus has shifted to empowering women with impactful missions.
During the competition, she pitched her vision to fashion icon Halima Aden, emphasizing her mission to break old industry patterns and bring different sectors together. Her journey in the Miss Germany program provided an intense opportunity for growth and learning, allowing her to reach a wider audience as a social sustainability advocate.
Jana Heinemann continues to be a driving force in the sustainable fashion movement, proving that style and substance can coexist beautifully.
